How do I get started with Silkfair as a Buyer?
Before you can start using the services available at Silkfair, you need to sign up for a Buyer’s account at Silkfair account. It is an easy 3 step process.

Registration Summary

Can I shop for items without registering myself at Silkfair?
You can make purchases from the Silkfair website as a guest. However, there are added benefits in registering with Silkfair. These include:

  • Saving time without having to enter your details, payment information and shipping details every time you shop
  • Ability to track the status of your order
  • Prove to sellers that you are a genuine by means of the enhanced feedback system
  • Chat in real-time with sellers regarding goods and services offered for sale

How do I pay the seller?
Listed below are a number of payment methods supported by Silkfair.

Online Payment methods
When paid by the method(s) listed below, the seller receives funds immediately (in real-time).

  • PayPal
  • Google Checkout

Offline Payment methods
When paid by method(s) listed below, the seller does not receive funds immediately since there is a probability of a delay in processing the payment.

  • Money Order
  • Cashier’s Check
  • Personal Check
  • Revolution MoneyExchange

A seller may support one or more of the above methods. Please check the seller’s store for details.

What is Google Checkout/PayPal? Do I need to register for an account with PayPal / Google account?
PayPal / Google Checkout is a hassle free payment method by which you can very securely pay for purchased items using a credit card or a bank account. Silkfair is not in any way affiliated with PayPal or Google instead we only facilitate these to help you to make your shopping experience better.

In order to start making payments using Google Checkout / PayPal, you are required to sign up for an account with the respective company. For more details/assistance on PayPal/Google Checkout, please visit the following links:

Note: It’s a good idea to check with the seller the accepted payment method(s) before you make a transaction.

What is Revolution MoneyExchange?
This is an alternative payment method to Google Checkout /PayPal. If you wish to use this service you will be required to register for an account with them. For more details please check their website (This link takes you outside Silkfair).

What currencies are accepted at Silkfair?
Currently transactions are carried out only in the United States Dollars (USD). Hence, if you pay from currencies other than USD you will be charged the USD equivalent in you currency.

Note: If you opt to pay using PayPal/Google Checkout, you will be charged the USD equivalent automatically. However, if you choose to pay via a Cashier’s Check or Money Order, you will have to do this conversion yourself.

Where can I find a Currency Converter?

In most Silkfair stores, you will be able to find an inbuilt currency converter located on the right of the Product Detail page. To access the Product Detail page, simple select the desired product and click on it.

To access the Product Detail page, first locate the item you wish to purchase and click on it. This would then automatically redirect you to the selected item’s Product Detail page.’ By accessing the Product Detail page you can find more information about the product including:

  • Cost
  • Shipping costs
  • Payment methods accepted
  • Tags
  • Materials
  • Techniques
  • IP information of the seller
  • Feedback/ rating details

How can I obtain more information about a seller?
Information about a seller can be obtained via the Product Detail page. However, if you wish to see other details such as other products available for sale, feedback or contact the retailer, click on the relevant tab.

I am lost! I am being redirected to a website out of Silkfair! What’s happening?
Silkfair has two types of stores listed on the website:

  • Market Shop
  • Custom Shop

Sellers can choose to sell their products using either store. As the name suggests, Custom Shop allows the seller to customize their store further in terms of looks as well including the web address. Hence, if you are visiting a custom shop, there are greater chances that you may be re-directed to a different web address other than the usual silkfair.com

I just visited a Custom Shop, how can I return back to the Silkfair website? Do I need to re-login to my account?
Silkfair employs the latest web technology that allows you stayed logged on to your account even when you are visiting a Custom Store. Hence, you don’t worry about being logged out.


To get back to the Silkfair website, simply click on the Shopping Cart link (this is normally located in the top of the Custom Store’s website, however could vary from store to store) and this will automatically redirect you back to the Silkfair website.

Tip: Once back in the Silkfair website, you can continue shopping by clicking on the Continue Shopping button.

Making a Purchase

Are transactions at Silkfair limited?
No, transactions are not limited. Silkfair allows users to complete as many transactions as you please.

How do I make a purchase at Silkfair?
Making purchase(s) on Silkfair is easy. It’s a 4 step process.

Step 1 – Login and select the item(s)

Browse through the Silkfair website and locate the item(s) you wish to buy. Once you have selected an item, click on the Add to Cart button. You can purchase any number of items from any retailer featured in the website. However, if you wish to purchase only a single item, you can do so by clicking on the Buy Now button.

Step 2 – Proceed to Checkout

Once you are satisfied with your choices, you are now ready to pay for the items in your shopping cart. Go to Shopping Cart* > Proceed to Checkout. This will display the Checkout page. The Shopping Cart is located on top of the page. When you click on this option, a menu is displayed (as shown in the image).

Step 3 – Enter shipping details and payment method

The Checkout page is an easy way to view details about the items in the order, return/refund policies of the buyer(s). It also displays the total amount due (in a more detailed fashion) with shipping and all applicable taxes.

You need to do the following in the Checkout page:

  • Take one last glance and confirm the item(s) in your shopping cart. You can remove item(s) using the corresponding Remove button.
    Note : If you wish to shop for further item(s) at this stage, click on the Continue Shopping button found at the bottom of the page and then repeat Step 2 once again.
  • Navigate to the Ship to link and select/enter the shipping address.
  • Select the Payment option and enter the requested details.
  • Leave a note to the seller by clicking on the Note to Seller button located next the item (optional).

Step 4 – Send Payment & Complete Order

Once you are satisfied with all information in the Checkout page, click on the Complete Order button to submit your order(s) to the respective seller(s).

Once your order is sent to the retailer, you will receive an email to your designated email address with order details and seller details.

Note: If you opt to pay for the order using PayPal / Google Checkout payment methods, you are automatically redirected to the Send Payment page.

In the Send Payment page:

  1. Click on the Pay with PayPal/Google Checkout link (found at the bottom) and you are redirect you the respective payment page.
  2. Enter your PayPal/Google Checkout credentials to process the payment.

After the payment is accepted, click on the appropriate button to return back to the Silkfair website.

The above steps are mandatory if PayPal/Google Checkout payment methods are selected. For others, you are automatically directed to the Order Complete page.

I paid for my order using PayPal but wasn’t directed to the Send Payment page. What’s happening?
PayPal has a number of different subscription types offered to sellers. The features integrated with each subscription also may vary slightly. Hence, in such an event, the seller will email you with full details on how to complete the payment.

Can I purchase items from more than one store at a time? How do I identify them?
Yes this is possible. Simply add your items to your shopping cart and proceed to checkout when you are ready to pay for the items purchased.

Identifying the items is easy. Once you are in the Checkout page, a summary of the items ordered is displayed on top of the page(see sample image below).

Can I pay for item(s) using different payment methods?
You can choose to pay for item(s) from either a single seller/multiple sellers using one or different payment methods.
In order to enable this feature, make sure to de-select the option Use this information for items with the same payment option (and where payment option is not selected yet) when entering the payment details into the Payment Options window.

Can I ship item(s) to multiple destinations?
Yes this is possible. This is similar to the entering multiple payment methods for different item(s) in your order. Enter the desired address using the Ship to link and make sure to de-select the option Use this address as shipping address for all items from the Shipping Information window.

What is the Return Policy at Silkfair?
The return policy varies from seller to seller. Details pertaining to the return policy are clearly listed in the Product Detail page. However, if you are in doubt and would like to get matters further clarified, please contact the relevant seller directly.

What are the shipping costs involved at Silkfair? Do you ship to countries other than the United States?
Each seller has its own shipping charges and shipping policies. At Silkfair we attempt to make your shopping experience hassle free and transparent as much as possible. Hence, the seller is required to list the shipping charges and details clearly in the Product Detail page. However, if you have any further queries, please contact the relevant seller for details.

Where is my order?  What’s the shipment status?  How do I track the progress of my order?

If you placed an order, but haven’t heard anything from the seller, you should contact the seller directly to request the status of your order.  You can contact the seller regarding your order by logging into your order and then click on the “Contact Seller” button.

Your purchase order detail receipt is either in your email order notification or in your purchased items listing page. Click here to select and view your Purchased Items page https://secure.silkfair.com/mysilk/account/purchased. The Purchased Items page will have a link where you can contact the seller directly.

You can easily track the progress of your order by visiting the Purchased Items page. This page displays consists of two sections:

  • Purchased Items – In this section, you will find orders that are in process as well as completed orders. Clicking on the order number will direct you to the relevant order detail page.
  • Cancelled Orders – All orders cancelled by you or declined by the seller are displayed here.

To access the Purchased Items page, go to Shopping Cart* > My Purchased Items from the menu located on top.

Note: The order status displayed in the Purchased Items page is only indicative. It’s recommended that you contact the seller directly for an update.

What are the different statuses of an order?
There are four different statuses used at Silkfair. Listed below are the statuses available in the Silkfair system:

  • New – This status appears as soon as you submit the order to the Seller.
  • Open – Once the order is viewed by the Seller and up until it’s processed, you will see this as the order status. The intermediately steps are also indicated when the order is in the ‘Open’ status.
  • Closed – Once the order is processed and shipped this appears as the status to indicate the transaction is complete.
  • Cancelled – This status appears indicating the order has been declined by the seller.

What if my purchase is declined?
If your purchased has been declined, it’s probably because the seller did not feel your purchase was adequate to be accepted. It’s also possible that you had no or very little feedback/ratings or Silkfair purchase history. If you need further detail information on the declined purchase, simply contact the seller directly or look for a similar item to buy or make a purchase from another seller.

The seller has given me a credit/discount for my order. How do I receive it?
If the seller has authorized a credit / refund, you will receive an email notification along with the explanation for the credit / refund. With regards to receiving the funds (credit), please contact the seller directly for details.

The seller has applied additional charges to my order. What do I do next?
There can be several reasons for the seller to apply an additional charge on your order. Possible reasons may include the additional cost incurred by seller when process the payment, any additional request(s) that you have made when placing the order etc.

If the seller has applied a further charge, you will receive an email with an explanation. If you are satisfied with the reason, you can authorize the transaction right away and make the additional funds available to the seller. In turn the seller to process your order as per norm.

However, if you decline the transaction and don’t pay the additional charge, the seller may choose to cancel your order and you may forfeit the amount paid. However, this largely depends on the seller’s/store policies. In such an event, please contact the seller directly for details.

Note: You will also receive any payment instructions along with the authorization email on how to pay the additional charges.

What if the product I received was not as it was listed (advertised) by the seller?
It’s unfortunate when situations like this occur, but members should try to contact each other, detailing what has happened before they try to contact Silkfair. If the situation is not rectified you can now take further action and contact Silkfair via the Contact Us page to notify the users mishandling of items. Silkfair will then contact that user to find a solution to the problem. If the problem still persists that user’s account will be monitored for future similar problems, and may be even terminated.

Can I track the shipment of my order via Silkfair?
Silkfair doesn’t deal with the shipment of your order. Please contact the seller for this information.

How do I return the goods I received and obtain a refund?
Please contact the seller directly for more details on returning goods and requesting a refund.

How do I view the item(s) I have purchased in the past (purchase history)?

Using the Purchased Items page, you can view all details of items purchased. You can also view details of any purchases that have been declined/ cancelled.

Bookmarks

How do I bookmark a store/item(s) from a page?
Silkfair allows you to bookmark a page/store/item/ category using the Add to Favorites icon add to favorites icon located on the top of the page.

Clicking on Favorites icon displays the following options:

  • This page – This will add the current page to your favorites list
  • The store(s) on this page – This will add the store currently visited to the Favorites list.
  • All items on this page – This will add all items displayed in the current page.
  • Categories on this page – This will add all categories of the items displayed in the current page.

To add a page/item/category, navigate to the desired page go to the Favorites icon and select the require option(s) from the list and hit the Update button. Note: When the update is successful, you are notified via an alert message which also indicates how many item(s) were added to the Favorites list.

How do I view/access my bookmarks?
You can access your bookmarked pages at any time using the Add to Favorites icon located on the top of any page.

To access a bookmark:

  1. Click on the Favorites icon add to favorites icon. This displays a drop down menu.
  2. In the drop down menu, click on the View all your Favorites link. This will then automatically redirect you to the My Favorites page.

Note: When you visit the My Favorites page, the bookmarked items are categorized into different groups. Hence, you are required to select the desired category before accessing a bookmark. For an example if you have bookmarked a store, it is categorized under ‘My Favorite Store’. Hence, first click on the ‘My Favorite Store’ section (to expand) and then locate the desired bookmark.

How do I delete a bookmark?
Deleting a Bookmark is easy. You can manage your Bookmarks using the My Favorites page.

To delete a bookmark:

  1. Click on the Favorites icon add to favorites icon. This displays a drop down menu.
  2. In the drop down menu, click on the View all your Favorites link. This will redirect you to the My Favorites page.
  3. In the My Favorites page, locate the required bookmark and click on the corresponding Remove link.

What is Favorited By?
The Favorited By page displays details of items that have been bookmarked as Favorite by other Silkfair members. It also displays the members who have bookmarked a store as Favorite. This is a particularly useful for sellers for promotional and statistica purposes.

To access the ‘Favorited By’ page, click on the Favorites icon add to favorites icon and select View all your Favorites link from the drop down menu. Thereafter click on the’ Favorited By’ tab.

Searching through Silkfair

How can I search for items that I want to buy?
You can search for items on Silkfair either by using the following methods:

  • Using the search bar – If you are looking for a particular item, searching can help you find it. A search bar is located on the top of every page in the website. Using this you can perform a basic or advance search as per your need. For details refer the question, how to use the search bar.
  • Browsing – If you are unsure of what item you wish to purchase or just window shopping, this is the best method to use. For your convenience, Silkfair has classified items into different sections such as:
    • Categories
    • New items
    • Featured stores
    • Stores/Sellers
    • Materials/Tags and more

To access the desired category, go to Buy and select the desired category from the menu. However, certain categories are also available on the left of the page for your convenience.

How do I perform a search using the Search bar?
The search bar is located in every page within the Silkfair website. You can perform either a basic or an advanced search as per your requirement.

Search results are done using fuzzy search, and the results are then displayed in order of relevancy, so a result that matches exactly how the search term was spelled will be ranked higher than a result that almost matched exactly the same.

  • Basic Search – Enter the desired text in the search bar and click on the Search icon.
  • Advanced Search – Click on the drop down button located next to the Search icon and you are automatically redirected to the Advanced Search page. Enter the requested information in the relevant places and click on the Search button.

Can I perform a search using a combined word / phrase?
The search bar supports phrases, parenthesis and Boolean operators. Listed below are the rules that you need to follow when applying them to the search bar.

  • You are allowed only to use the Boolean operators AND, OR, and NOT. Boolean operators are a special set of logical keywords that will help you to enhance your search. Your search may comprise of any one or more Boolean operator.
    Example.: jewelry AND gift NOT glass
  • When including a phrase it must be enclosed in double quotes.
    Example.: jewelry OR “hand made”
  • You can add any number of parentheses to the search words. However, all opened parenthesis needs to be closed appropriately. Parenthesis is the use of brackets in the search term. This will instruct the search engine to priorities the keywords when it’s performing a search.
    Example: jewelry OR “hand made” NOT (glass OR plastic) AND gift

Note: This is applicable to both basic and advanced search.

How can I search for an item within a specific price range?

You need to use the advance search facility to search an item within a given price range. To access the advanced search facility, click on the drop down appearing right next to the Search icon. This displays the Advanced Search page. In this page enter the desired Price Range and click on the Search button.

Tip: The Advanced Search page has a number of different fields such as Tags, Materials, Category etc. You can use these fields to combine your search with the above mentioned criteria.

I need to search for a particular store. How can I do that?
You can search for a particular seller using the Seller/Store page.

To search for a seller/store, go to Buy > Sellers/Stores from the drop down menu. This displays the Seller/Store page. In the Seller/Store page, you can locate the required seller/store using the index provided. However, if you are not entirely sure of the seller/store name, use the ‘Find a Store’ search facility provided within the page.

Note: A seller/store is identified by the username/user id.

How do I search for item(s) within a particular store?

This can be done using the search bar. You can perform either a basic or an advanced search as per your requirement.

Search within a store

To search for item(s) by seller/store:

  1. Locate the particular seller’s store, either by using the Seller/Store page or simply searching for an item.
  2. Once within the store page, enter the required text in the Search bar (located on the top of any page). Make sure the option search this store is enabled.
  3. Click on the Search icon. Alternatively for an advanced search, click on the drop down button located next to the search icon.

What are tags/materials?
Tags are keywords by means which Silkfair categorizes items available for sale from various sellers. A keyword may consist of one, two or more number of words and represents a top-level category or subcategory in the Silkfair’s item categorization.
Let’s look at the following example:

Similarly, materials are a single-word tags used for categorization of items. Instead of helping you understand what an item is used for; materials help you figure out what it’s made out of at a quick glance. Please note that since material tag is used to describe what the item is made-up of, no subcategories can exist.

Note: You can also find other types of special tags used within the website such as Countries, Techniques, Brand/Manufactures, Antique/Vintage period. These all are listed within the Tag page. To access the Tag page, go to Buy > Materials/Tags.

What use do I have with tags?
Tags being keywords is an ideal way to browse items or window shop within the Silkfair website. In other words, instead of you having to think up of several keywords yourself, we at Silkfair have done this job for you. All you need to do is simply click/enter the required tag when browsing. All items classified under the selected tag are displayed instantly!

How can I lookup item(s) using tag(s)?
There are two ways that you can make use of tags in Silkfair:

Method 1: Using Tag page

  1. Go to Buy > Materials / Tags. This displays the Tag page.
  2. In the Tag page, locate the required tag. Clicking on a tag will display all items that are associated with it.

  • The Tag page lists all different tags including Material, Countries, Techniques and much more.
  • You can also lookup a certain tag using the search bar provided in each section.

Method 2: Using the Advanced Search
The Advance Search page allows you to search for items using their allocated Tag(s) such as Materials, Location, Technique and much more. To access the Advanced Search page, simply click on the drop down button located next to the Search icon. This displays the Advanced Search page. Enter the required tags in the appropriate fields and click on the search button.

What is My Tags?
Use this option to lookup any custom tags that you have added to the Silkfair website. This feature is useful if you are a seller at Silkfair.

Communication

I have a question for the seller, how can I contact the seller?
If you have any queries regarding a product, you can contact the seller prior to making a purchase. Silkfair facilitates the following methods:

  • Email – This is the easiest method to get in touch with the seller at any time of the day. To email the seller, first locate the item / store in the Silkfair website and click on the Contact Store tab. Fill in the requested details and click on the Send button.
  • Minichat – This is the latest addition to Silkfair. No more waiting for emails, sellers can now respond to your queries immediately. More details can be obtained by reading the section How to contact a seller using Minichat.

How do I view / send a message using Silkfair?
The Communicate tab is the one-stop solution to view and manage your messages at Silkfair. To view / send a message, go to Communicate > My Messages Center this displays the Messages page. Use the options available to send a message / view old messages received from other Silkfair members.

What is Minichat? Do I need to install any software provided by Silkfair?
Minichat is the latest addition to Silkfair. Like any conventional chat software available today, you can directly communicate with any Silkfair member easily and in real-time. You don’t have to install any software. All you need to make sure that you have the latest version of the internet browser installed in your local machine.

How can I contact a seller using Minichat?

To contact a seller using minichat:

  1. Login to your Silkfair account and locate the seller’s store. You can do this by searching for a specific store using the Store/Seller search facility. Alternatively, you can look up an item and then access the seller’s (store) details from the Store homepage.
  2. In the Stores/Sellers page or the Store homepage, locate the availability of the online link and click on it (see image). This will open the minichat window.Note: If the seller is offline, it is indicated by a grey bulb. Furthermore, you will not be able to locate the online link; instead the text ‘offline’ would appear.
  3. In the minichat window, type your message and press the Send button. Alternatively, you can hit the enter key on the keyboard.

Can I use minichat to chat with other Silkfair members?
Using minichat you can chat with any Silkfair member regardless of their level, i.e.: buyer or seller. You have the option of either adding the Silkfair member to your chat/friends list or simply initiating a conversation on the fly.

Can I chat with members who are currently logged on to Silkfair?

You can initiate a chat with Silkfair members who are currently logged on to the website even though they are not in your chat/friends list. To view who’s currently online, go to Share > Who’s Here.

How do I search for a member’s username/user id?
Searching a Silkfair member is easy. Simply go to Share > Members. This displays the Members page. In the Members page you will find an index from which you can lookup details of any member. Alternatively, you can use the ‘Find a Member’ search facility integrated to the page and perform a search.

Note: Using the above method you can locate username/user id of both buyers and sellers alike. However, if you wish to search for members who are sellers, go to Buy> Stores/Sellers to perform your search.

How do I add a member to my minichat buddy list?
To add a Silkfair member to your chat/friend list, you will require their username/user id.

To add a friend to your minichat list:

  1. Login to your Silkfair account.
  2. Go to Communicate > My Message Center and click on the Friends List tab. This displays the Friends List page.
  3. In the Friends List page, go to the My Friends section and click on the Add a Friend button. This displays the Request/Invite a Friend window.
  4. In the Request/Invite a Friend window, enter your Silkfair member’s user id in the Enter Login field. Optionally you can enter a message.
  5. Click on the Send button.

Send chat invitation

If the request is sent successfully, a new entry in the Friend Request area is displayed with the Status Awaiting Authorization. Once your buddy has authorized your chat invitation, you can start chatting right away.

How do I receive a chat authorization?
All chat authorizations when received are directed into your Silkfair email.

To check your chat authorization message, login to your Silkfair account and go to Communicate > My Message Centre. This displays the My Messages page. ‘In the My Messages page you will notice that all New Messages are grouped under one section. Hence, click here to locate the Chat authorization received from your buddy / friend.

Note: You will also receive a reminder email to your inbox to inform you of your account activity.

I have received a request to add a friend to my minichat list, what do I do?

To confirm a chat authorization:

  1. Login to your Silkfair account.
  2. Go to Communicate > My Message Center and click on the Friends List tab. This displays the Friends List page.
  3. In the Friends List page, go to the Friend Request section, locate the desired request and click on the corresponding Add button.

Once the user id is successfully added to you chat list, the contact will be automatically moved to the My Friend List.

I have added my friend to the chat list. How can I start chatting?
All the friends who are in your chat list and are online appear in the Communicate menu. Hence, click on the Communicate option to find out who is online and to initiate a chat.

To chat with a friend / buddy on your minichat list:

  1. Login to your Silkfair account and click on the Communicate option. This displays a menu.Note: The Communicate option is displayed on the top of the page. For your convenience, the number of friends/contacts online is also displayed next to the Communicate option.
  2. All friends appearing online are displayed in the menu.
  3. To initiate a chat, click on the Chat link corresponding to desired the contact/friend. This will open the minichat window.
  4. In the minichat window, type your message and press the Send button. Alternatively, you can hit the enter key on the keyboard.

I received a popup message with the title Incoming IM Message. What is this?

This is the invitation you receive when a Silkfair member tries to initiate a conversation via the minichat feature. Click on the Yes link to start the conversation.

How do I delete a Silkfair member from my chat list?
Deleting a user can be done using the Friends List page. To delete / remove a contact from your chat list:

  1. Login to your Silkfair account.
  2. Go to Communicate > My Message Center and navigate to the Friends List tab.
  3. In the Friend List page, select the desired Silkfair member from the My Friends List section and click on the corresponding Remove link.

How can I view more information about a Silkfair member before I add him/her to my chat list?

A member’s profile is easily accessible by clicking on the username/user id in the Friends List page.

To access the Friend List page, go to Communicate > My Message Center and navigate to the Friends List tab.
