Why the name ‘Silkfair’?
Our name takes its roots from the trade routes for commerce called “Silk Route” or “Silk Road” established by the ancient civilizations of China and India through the Middle East up to the Mediterranean Sea. The ancient trade routes bridged the East with the West and greatly influenced the development and flowering of these great civilizations, helping to lay the foundation for the modern world trade patterns.

What is so unique about Silkfair?
Silkfair’s unique Custom Shop and Market Shop gives sellers the capability to have an independent customized and branded web shop (Custom Shop), and at the same time be able to sell the same inventory in a marketplace with a Market Shop. Market Shop provides sellers a Silkfair branded and standardized presence while a buyer shops through the marketplace. Each seller is given a unique Silkfair web address for the Market Shop. Custom Shop gives the seller the unique opportunity to brand and customize the independent shop for the seller’s own customer base, where sellers can bring their own domain name and web address.

It’s truly unique that sellers can now have an independent and customizable shop and participate in a marketplace, without increased efforts in managing inventory.

Silkfair also has a unique user-friendly interface – Tired of going through page after page just to list or edit an item? – We don’t like that either, hence we have designed our user interface so that sellers can edit listings directly. Just log in with your ID, get to the item you want to edit and click on any field. Hovering your mouse/cursor over the editable fields will give you gentle highlighted signals to let you know that it’s an editable field and go on, make your change.

Other particularity that Silkfair offers is that of the video application, where you can showcase your product in glorious detail. You know how they say a picture is worth a thousand words; now imagine what a video can do! You can use this application to show video clips of your products, on your store; you can even upload an ad of your own store. Don’t just show your customers product pictures! Now you have the chance to show your products to your customers.

Additionally, each store can create and maintain its own forum and blog. Allowing you to interact with interested customers directly, maintaining customer satisfaction and loyalty, gaining customer trust and their feedback on your products, and on your store, all with unbelievable ease and sophistication.

Getting started

How do I get started on Silkfair?
Before you can start buying/selling, you need to sign up for a FREE* Silkfair account.

Please make sure to have the following information at hand before you begin the registration process:

I am a Buyer

  • A valid e-mail address

I am a Seller

  • A valid e-mail address
  • Your credit card details

To get started, click on the Register today link found at the top left-hand corner of the website. Enter the requested information in the correct places and click on the Register now button.

Thereafter, there are two ways in which you may complete the registration process. You may wish to choose either one method.

Method 1: As soon as the details are recorded in our database, you are redirected to the registration page. Enter the requested details in the relevant tabs to complete the registration.

Method 2: A confirmation email is sent to the designated email address. Click on the link supplied in this email which redirects you to the registration page. Enter the requested details in relevant tabs to complete the registration.

I want to be a seller and a buyer; do I have to sign up for two accounts?
The buyer and seller accounts are both integrated into one account when you sign up. Hence, you don’t need to worry about this.

Can I use the same email address to register for a buyer and a seller account?
Silkfair provides you with a all-in-one account, you can use the same email address to register for the same.

I need to signup for a buyer account only. Can I opt out from being a seller?
Absolutely! When you signup for a Silkfair you are automatically signed up as a buyer. You can upgrade to a seller account at a later date if needed.

Where is my confirmation email? I don’t think I received one!
Check your junk mail folder; it may have ended up in there. Sometimes emails from unknown sources are sent to the junk mail folder or spam folder by default.

I have a problem logging into my Silkfair account!
Have you activated your account via the confirmation email sent by Silkfair? You can’t login if your account has not been activated. When you first register with Silkfair, we send you a confirmation email. You’ll just need to click on the link appearing on this email to activate your account. If the problem still persists, please get in touch with our customer support department via support@silkfair.com

Account Information

Can I change my username?
Silkfair offers you the flexibility of amending your email address in case you have changed it.

To change your email address:

  1. Login to your Silkfair and go to My Account > My Account Page. This displays the Profile page.
  2. In the Profile page, locate the My Account section.
  3. Click on the Edit button. Enter your new email address in the relevant field.
  4. Click on the Save button.

Note: Using the above method, you can also change your other personal details such as your name, mailing address and preferences.

I forgot my password, what should I do?
If you cannot recall your password, send us a request to reset your password via the forgot password? link located on top of the Silkfair homepage.We will then email you a temporary password which will allow you to sign back in to the website. Once logged in, please make sure to change this temporary password.

Note: You are required to use the Recover Password option (from the popup) to recover your forgotten password. This popup is available when you click on the Forgotten Password link on the top of the Silkfair homepage.

I can’t remember my username, can I still login?
Yes,login to your Silkfair account using your designated email address associated with your Silkfair account. Alternatively, you can use the forgotten password link to recover your username and password together at the same time.

I have forgotten my username and/or password and/or e-mail address, what can I do?
In this case, you’ll have to email support@silkfair.com and ask for help. Keep in mind we’ll need some way for you to prove ownership of the account. If you’ve lost all your information, you’ll have to register a new account with us.

How do I change my password?
There are two methods by which you can change your password.

Method 1 – By logging into your Silkfair account:

  1. Go to My Account > My Account Page. This displays the Profile page.
  2. In the Profile page, locate the My Account section.
  3. Click on the Edit button. Enter the new Password as requested in the correct places.
  4. Click on the Save button.

Note: Using this method, you can also change the Password Question and Password Answer if desired.

Method 2: Using the forgotten password link

  1. Click on the top menu link forgot password? This displays a popup window.
  2. In the popup window, select the Reset Password link and enter the requested details on screen to reset your password.

Note: During the change password process (in method 2) you will be asked questions pertaining to your account in order to prove your ownership.

How do I change the email address associated with my Silkfair account?
Silkfair offers you the flexibility of amending your email address in case you have changed it.

To change your email address:

  1. Login to your Silkfair and go to My Account > My Account Page. This displays the Profile page.
  2. In the Profile page, locate the My Account section.
  3. Click on the Edit button. Enter your new email address in the relevant field.

How do I change my mailing address?
You can change your mailing address using the Profile page. To access the Profile page, go to My Account > My Account page. For further details refer to the question, How do I change the email address for my Silkfair account?

How do I change the billing information?
If you are a Seller and would like to change your credit card details associated with your Silkfair account.

  1. Go to My Account > My Account page and click on the Financial tab.
  2. Here you will find the My Payment Types section. Click on the Edit button to enter the new card details.
  3. Once you are satisfied with the changes click on the Save button.

How do I keep track of my activities at Silkfair?
Each time when there is an activity in your Silkfair account, you will receive an email notification to your designated email address. By default this option is enabled. However, you can amend this at anytime.

To amend email notification preferences:

  1. Login to your Silkfair and go to My Account > My Account Page. This displays the Profile page.
  2. In the Profile page, locate the My Account section.
  3. Click on the edit button. You are now required to select /deselect the required option(s) from the list.
  4. Click on the Save button.

How do I close my Silkf air account?
Are you leaving us? Why? If you really want to, please email us at support@silkfair.comto request this and we’ll do it for you.

Can I close my account to start a new one?
Yes this is possible. However, you will need to use a different email address. For security reasons usernames and emails can’t be reused once they are in our system. Please contact us at support@silkfair.com, if you would like to close your account.

Note: In such an event none of your information from your previous account will be carried over to your new account.

How do I add more personal information about myself?
Login to Silkfair and go to My Account > My Account page, there are several options in this page that allows you to add more detailed personal information.Once you have made the required changes, click on the Save button.

How secure is Silkfair?
The security of your personal information is top priority to us, we work to protect your information during transmission by using Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) technology which encrypts the information you input.

Will my information be kept private?

What measures are utilized by Silkfair to combat fraud / enhance security?
Silkfair utilizes a number of techniques identified in the whitepaper to help combat online fraud and identity theft. One such feature is the use of IP location which provides the location details of parties, the buyer and seller.

What is an IP location?
This is a fraud detection method applied by Silkfair to record a buyer’s or seller’s legitimacy by way of recording the user’s IP address and other details. These include the user’s IP address, ISP details and region.

What is an IP address?
Internet Protocol (IP) address is a unique number which enables to identify a computer within a network. This is assigned to you by your internet service provider (ISP).

How do I view the IP location/details noted down by Silkfair?
Login to Silkfair and go to My Account > My Account page > Profile. Scroll down to the IP derived location section. This will display all the details pertaining to the IP address and location details.

I have recently moved address / changed service provider. Will this be an issue?
As best practice we recommend you to update these details in your account as soon as possible. Simply log on to your Silkfair account and go to My Account > My Account page > Profile and scroll down to the IP derived location section. Click on the Recalibrate button to regenerate the new details information.

What steps can I take to prevent fraud / abuse of my account?
There are several best practice methods. Listed below are a few one of them:

  • Remember to Logoff from your account when not in use.
  • Disable the login “Remember Me” when using a shared computer.
    Note: The “Remember Me” optional feature is available for registered users who can optionally stay logged in (for up to two weeks), and not have to re-login after web browser is closed/re-opened.
  • Clear the cache when using a public computer.
  • Identify Phishing emails.
    Note: Phishing is the process of fraudulently obtaining personal data via email. Silkfair will never ask for your login credentials or any other personal data via email. Be aware of such scams and be vigilant at all times. Report such incidents to abuse@silkfair.com

Where can I find Silkfair’s regulations?
Silkfair’s rules are described in the Terms of Use (which is a legal agreement for using the site) you can find the link in the left-hand corner at the bottom of any page.

How do I report a violation of Silkfair’s regulations?
You may send us an e-mail to abuse@silkfair.com. We take all such matters seriously and act on the matter as soon as we are aware of the abuse. Don’t hesitate to contact us. We are here to make Silkfair fraud-free.

What are the consequences for breaking Silkfair’s regulations?
Initially, we try to solve matters with users personally and privately. If things don’t get resolved successfully, Customer Support will issue an official warning letter. If the warning is not effective in cutting regulation-breaking behavior, site abilities may be limited or an account may be terminated. If site abilities are limited, it will only affect the section of the site being abused (for example, sending spam on Blogs or Forums will conclude in the user being banned from these sites).

Site Features

What are tags?
Tags are keywords by means which Silkfair categorizes items available for sale from various sellers. A keyword may consist of one, two or more number of words and represents a top-level category or subcategory in the Silkfair’s item categorization. As a Buyer this is a useful feature that will allow you to search and easily identify the desired item. Sellers, you need to add the required keywords to your Silkfair store. Please see the following questions for more in-depth knowledge tags:

What are materials?
Materials are a special kind of single-word Tags used for categorization of items at Silkfair. Instead of helping you understand what an item is used for; they help you figure out what it’s made out of. This is mainly a top-level categorization. Hence, when you click on a single material tag, you will find a number of different items classified under the given category.

What is a Category (main list)?
Depending on the characteristics of an item, Silkfair has grouped them into different categories. This is feature is provided by default for all sellers. Buyers will find this useful feature as it provides a quick overview of the available categories. This is also another top-level categorization. Hence, when you click on a single item category, you will find a number of different items classified under the given category. There are two methods on how you can view the available item categories within Silkfair:

Method 1: The categories panel is located in most pages of the Silkfair website. Simply click on the desired category.

Method 2: From the top menu. Go to Buy > Categories and select the desired category from the Categories page.

Can I suggest missing categories to be added to the main list?
If there’s a category we’ve missed, email us your suggestion at support@silkfair.com, we will evaluate your reasons for adding a new category. Alternatively, you can take advantage of using tags, materials, and descriptions to classify your items. This too will effectively help broaden your product listing within Silkfair.

How can I perform a search on available items?
A search bar is located on the top of every page. This is contextual based search. In other words, any text entered in the text box will be only search against the information available in the particular section/page displayed. However, using the ‘Advance Search’ option you may search the entire site in more depth and detail. See Buyer Help for more details.

What are Favorites?
When you find an item or shop on Silkfair that you love, you can bookmark it by adding it to your Favorites. Unlike a Watchlist, the added advantage in this feature is that all your bookmarks are available to you next time after you logout/exit the website. To add an item or a shop, click the link in the right side of your screen, underneath your Watchlist where the Add to favorites link is situated. To view your Favorites list, go to the Add to favorites link and click on the View all your Favorites option.

What is PayPal or Google Checkout?
PayPal or Google Checkout is an account-based system that lets anyone with an e-mail address securely send and receive online payments using their credit card or bank account. It’s a popular way to electronically pay for items online as a seller.

Sellers need to setup this facility on their Silkfair store for buyers to use it.

Can I use a video to promote my store, how does it work?
In an effort to offer users with most advanced technologies available today, Silkfair has innovated and added a Video feature on product page and product thumbnails. This feature enables you to upload videos of pretty much anything you want (please refer to the Terms of Use for details on inappropriate materials that should not be submitted). The video function could be used to:

  • Show in more detail your product’s features
  • Show a demo of your store or product
  • Show an advertisement of your store

As the saying goes, a picture says a thousand words; this is a definite advantage for Sellers at Silkfair!

Feedback Mapping, what does it mean?
Feedback is an essential part of Silkfair as it provides the buyer a better picture about the seller. Feedback Mapping is the process of linking feedback with from the buyer to seller and vice-versa. This will enable Silkfair members to have a better view in spotting potential feedback-scams. This is a problem that is currently damaging other marketplaces. Silkfair has found a way to deal with it, now take advantage of that!

Does Silkfair support ebay feedback / ratings in my Silkfair store?
Yes, Silkfair provides you the flexibility to have your eBay feedback listed on your Silkfair store.

Does Silkfair support the importing of listings from other marketplaces / websites?
Yes, this feature is currently available for Esty and eBay listings. Hence, if you have an Esty / eBay store, you can directly import details to your Silkfair store directly.

What statistics / reporting mechanisms are available within Silkfair?
Each store has a number of built-in tools that allow you to monitor how many buyers (or sellers) have visited so far and how many items you have sold. This information can be made public. However, by default this information private. Furthermore, summarized statistics reports downloadable in Adobe Acrobat PDF format and CSV file format are also available for your convenience.

What is the Communicate feature / Message center?
The communication feature/ Message center is a one-stop place that allows you to send/receive and view messages from buyers and sellers. You will also be able to send and receive messages from Silkfair using this feature. To view your messages, first login to your Silkfair account next go to Communicate > My Message Center.

What is Store Minichat?
The Store Minichat feature is the latest addition to Silkfair and allows you to communicate with your buyer/seller on real-time basis. As a seller you can now meet and greet visitors; conduct events for sales; answer questions; walk potential buyers through products all in real-time and much more!

What Community features / facilities avail at Silkfair?
At the Silkfair community we always encourage you to interact with sellers or buyers of specific items and gain the full knowledge on their items and interest. It enables the direct relations between you and your counterpart. Through Blogs and Forums already existent or through the creation of a new one on the field of your interest, you can give space to a community of individuals interested in the same aspects as you. Silkfair is decreasing the gap between you and your matching part.

Some features contained within Silkfair include:

  • Blog – This is an exclusive area where Silkfair members can freely share their thoughts and ideas. Experiences can range from simply buying goods from the website to reviews on items sold on the website.
  • Member – This lists details of all members in the Silkfair community. You can use the index/search facility to locate a Silkfair member.
  • Whose Here – This page lists all members currently online. You can use minichat to initiate a conversation with a member and add them to your chat list if needed.
  • Forums – The forums within Silkfair act as a bulletin board. You can post your thoughts and offer help to members in need.
  • Invite Friends – Use this feature to help spread the good word of Silkfair to non-Silkfair members.
  • Chat room – An easy way to communicate with Silkfair members real-time without having the need to add them to your chat list.
  • Badges – A useful tool for sellers and buyers alike. Provides graphical message of Silkfair which can be easily placed on other websites to promote your store/profile.

What are Forums?
The Forums are a big part of Silkfair community spaces. These are public bulletin boards on Silkfair for all members to discuss a variety of things, ranging from getting help with using the site or advice on running a shop to suggesting new site features and reporting bugs, as well as just socializing with others in the Silkfair community. The Forums can be found under the Share option of the site (see top of any page within the Silkfair website).

Feedback

What is feedback and how does it help me at Silkfair?
Feedback is a vital part of the Silkfair community as it helps you to build your reputation as a buyer or seller within the community. Feedback at Silkfair is made up of comments and ratings left by a buyer / seller at the end of a transaction (sale). Furthermore, the Feedback system at Silkfair is said to be ‘double-blind’.

What is meant by ‘double- blind’?
The term ‘double-blind’ simply refers that each party associated with the feedback is concealed until the latter completes the process. In other words, neither the buyer nor the seller knows what Feedback each other have issued until both parties completes their feedback. When one party issues a feedback first, that triggers a grace period of 14 days in which the other party needs to complete the feedback before the ability to issue feedback is closed. It’s always recommended that Feedbacks should begin when both parties agree the transaction (sale) is complete.

How is the Feedback at Silkfair calculated?
The rating system at Silkfair uses a combination of Ratings, Feedback and a series of questions (posed to the buyer / seller separately) to compute the ultimatum. This is then added to your total feedback received. The average score is then derived from the total and is then deemed to be your ‘Silkfair Rating’ displayed in your profile.

If you participate in a transaction as the buyer, you are asked the following questions to which you are required to respond using a series of Yes/No type options provided.

  • Was the item received as described?
  • Was the seller able to answer questions and resolve any problems?
  • Was the seller responsive throughout?

If you participate in a transaction as the seller, you are asked the following questions to which you are required to respond using a series of Yes/No type options provided.

  • Was the buyer responsive with payment and completing the transaction?
  • Was the buyer easy to deal with and cooperative?
  • Did the buyer have any issues with the item(s)?

What ratings exist in the Silkfair Feedback system?
There are 5 different categories of ratings available and is depicted in a bar graph style in each member’s profile. Furthermore, ‘Excellent’ is the highest and the maximum rating awarded, while ‘Poor’ is the lowest in the category.

When should a buyer leave feedback?
Once the item purchased is received from the seller and the transaction completed in accordance to the terms set by seller in the product listing.

When should a seller leave feedback?
The seller can leave feedback as soon as they receive payment, or wait until they’ve confirmed that the buyer has received the item and is happy with the transaction, we recommend waiting until buyer confirmation.

Is there a deadline to issue feedback to a seller / buyer?
You have a grace period of 14 days once either party issues a feedback to complete your Feedback. After 14 days, the system automatically closes it and won’t allow you to enter any Feedback pertaining to the particular transaction (sale).

Does Silkfair support ratings received from eBay / Etsy?

Currently Silkfair supports only ratings received for eBay stores. You need to setup your eBay user ID with Silkfair to avail this facility.

Once enabled, the eBay rating will then be viewable in your Silkfair Feedback tabs, store home page, and within each listing. It will be shown as a clickable link underneath Silkfair ratings.

Note: You eBay rating is refreshed once a day.

I am the buyer, how do I leave feedback to my seller?
You will start entering Feedback for a seller ideally when you have received the goods in order! Care should be taken when leaving Feedback as once it’s submitted cannot be erased. It’s also important that you make your comments are fair and factual.

To leave feedback for an order:

  1. Login to your Silkfair account, go to My Account > My Start Page. This displays the Start Page. Locate and scroll down to the Feedback/Rating section.
  2. Click on the relevant order number. This displays the Order Details page.
  3. In the Order Details page, click on the ‘Enter feedback on this seller/order’. Enter the requested details and click on the Save button.

Note: If the Feedback process is not complete, the Seller has 14 days grace period (since the day it was initiated) to complete it.

I am the seller, how do I leave feedback to my buyer?
Ideally, you will start entering feedback for a buyer once the goods are shipped and received by the buyer and is happy with their order. Care should be taken when leaving Feedback as once it’s submitted cannot be erased. It’s also important that you make your comments are fair and factual.

To leave feedback to your buyer:

  1. Login to your Silkfair account, go to My Store > Feedback Pending. This displays the Start Page. Locate and scroll down to the Feedback/Rating section.
  2. Click on the relevant order number. This displays the Order Details page.
  3. In the Order Details page, click on the Close button located on top of the page. You will receive a confirmation message. Click on the Ok button.
  4. Immediately, you will see a popup window (this is the Feedback form). Enter the requested details and click on the Save button.

Note: If the Feedback process is not complete, the Buyer has 14 days grace period (since the day it was initiated) to complete it!

Will I receive a reminder when Feedback has been initiated by the buyer/seller?

When the seller / buyer initiate a Feedback, you automatically receive a reminder asking you to complete the Feedback. To view this reminder:

If you are a seller, go to My Store and click on the number of ‘Pending Feedbacks’ link.

How soon can I view my feedback?
You can view Feedback as soon as it is posted.

Buyers – To view feedback received from sellers, go to My Account > View Feedback.

Sellers – To view feedback received from buyers, go to My Store > View Feedback.

I am a buyer and missed out on the 14 day grace period. Can I still leave Feedback for the seller?
Unfortunately, once the 14 day grace period is over, you will not be able to leave feedback for the transaction in particular. However, you can leave a Feedback for the particular items that you purchased.

To leave a comment / feedback for an item listed in a store:

  1. Login to your Silkfair account and browse through store and locate the particular item.
  2. Click on the item, this will direct you to the Product Detail page. Scroll down to the Customer Comments section.
  3. Click on the Post a Comment button enter the requested details and click on the Save button.

How do I view Feedback I have received from a buyer / seller?
The Feedback tab is a dedicated section that allows you to view all Feedback received from Silkfair members. This page is divided into the following sections:

  • All Feedback – Displays Feedback received as a seller, buyer and any left for others
  • Feedback as a Buyer
  • Feedback as a Seller
  • Left for others

To access this page, go to My Store > Start Page and click on the Feedback tab.

I purchased an item as a guest; can I leave a Comment / Feedback to the seller?
You need a Silkfair account to leave Feedback / Comment for a seller. Click on the Register Today link to sign up for a FREE Silkfair account.

I am looking to make a purchase on Silkfair, how do I view Feedback for a seller?

The Ratings, Feedback and eBay ratings received for a particular seller can be found in the store homepage / Product Detail page in a summarized format (see image). Clicking on the View Feedback link will allow you to see more details.

I am a seller, how do I view feedback received for the buyer (before accepting the order)?
Buyer’s details are displayed on top of the Oder Detail page, including the rating and feedback information. Click on the View Feedback link for details.

To view orders, go to My Store > Show Orders and click on the desired order.

What is map feedback / map buyers / map comments?
This is a simple feature that allows you to view the approximate geographical location of the Silkfair member who posted a comment to your store/profile.
